Sunday Post to wrap up the last few weeks.
I had a crazy few weeks. Of course that had to be some wonderful excuse for me not blogging in over a week. Well last week was my birthday. I tuned “40 again”. And I celebrated for three days straight.
I started out at McKay’s used bookstore in Nashville on Thursday. I had so much fun there. My daughters were both in school and so my friends and I were free to browse the shelves as long as we wanted without any “mommy, let’s go”. They had so many good choices. I had a pile of twenty books picked out, but in the end I only bought 6. Plus I got a few selections for older daughter. So what did I finally choose:
- Fixing Shadows, Susan Barrett
- The Monsters of Templeton, by Lauren Groff
- Between Friends, by Kristy Kiernan
- The Red Tent, by Anita Diamant
- Breakfast with Buddha, by Roland Merullo
- Moloka’i by Alan Brennert
This store is so wonderful. There are three in Tennessee. The one we went to is huge. I could spend the whole day in the fiction and children’s sections, but there is a great audio section too. They also have music, movies and video games. If you live in Tennessee near one of their locations, it is worth a visit.
Aside from the bookstore, there was a weekend full of eating. We visited the Cheesecake Factory on Thursday, The ChopHouse on Friday and then Carrabas on Saturday. Yum!
My husband and daughters gave me the best gifts too. I got a zable bracelet, which is pretty much a version of a Pandora bracelet. I got a little family bead to start my collection. Then I got the best gift ever. My very own red dell laptop with a pink wireless mouse. This laptop is beautiful. It is quiet, the battery lasts more than 15 minutes, it does not burn my lap when I use it in a comfy chair and it matches my kitchen walls (my husband pointed that out, who knew). It was over all 0ne of the best birthdays I can remember.
It was a crazy few days. I spent most of Sunday recovering. This “40 again” year old body can’t take all that eating and cocktailing like it used to. Life was back on schedule this week. Cheer, PTO, gymnastics, reading, blogging, cooking, cleaning. M
y goals this week were:
- Finish listening to Sworn to Silence, by Linda Castillo. I did it. It was very good and something a bit out of my comfort zone. The only complaint I had with it was some of the language used, but I excused it since it was a murder mystery full of cops.
- Finish In the Shadow of the Cypress, by Thomas Steinbeck. Nope I just gave up. I wanted to love this book. It had everything that I like in a book. I bit of history, a bit of mystery. But it was BORING!
- Brush up on Hidden Wives, by Claire Avery. I finished this earlier this month but our meeting is Thursday. If I want to contribute, I better go over the details again. This book was really good and our discussion was just the same. I think that there were some really good issues to discuss in this story but my book club has some ADD issues (which are completely my fault) and we skipped around a bunch. We ended up talking more about the book for September.
- Decide whether I will read September’s book for our bookclub. Rush Home Road, by Lori Lansens was chosen. Two people have read it so far and one liked it and one really didn’t . I am not sure I will enjoy it, and with my
recent and CURRENT reading slump, I am not sure if I want to attempt another so-so book. After the spirited debate about this book on Thursday, I have pretty much decided to skip this book. I am sure it is good, but I have received two books to review from Amazon and two to review from Crazy Book Tours. So , if I have time after those four, I might give it a try…..

I loved both the Red Tent and Molokai. I read the Red Tent years ago. Molokai is one that I got at the library last year. I liked it so much that I went and got Honolulu by the same author. Enjoy!
Do you read any YA lit? If so, I HIGHLY recommend The Hunger Games series. My teenage niece introduced me to it and I loved it!
I have been sooo lazy — just got back from my vacation in Boston and am now trying to catch up with everyone’s blogs!!
I really enjoyed The Monsters of Templeton — I reviewed it a couple of months ago, and I still like to think about that story! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it!
I had to comment since I’m the one who didn’t like Rush Home Road. Actually, I thought it was a really well written story. There was a lot of depth to the characters and author intertwined the stories of their lives beautifully but their stories were really heart wrenching. Although the characters handled the sadness and tragedies of their lives with a quiet grace and understanding that sometimes bad things happen and you have to get up and live your life, it was hard to read. I like a book to life me up and make me laugh, like a good romantic comedy. This was more of a real life documentary for my taste.
Happy Belated Bithday! It sounds like you had a wonderful three day celebration. The laptop is a wonderful gift.
I hope you enjoy The Red Tent. I loved this book – if only to realize how difficult life was and surviving all things ‘female’ back then. An eye opener!
